Are there benefits to having and teaching standardized English? How can we teach standard English without diminishing our students' other linguistic identities? Is it possible to do so without creating a split-identity?

Rather than language choices leading to a split identity, is it more realistic to think that they make us more of a well-rounded and language-rich people? Do we code-switch already? How do we alter our language choices? How might we build upon this in the ELA classroom? I look forward to hearing your thoughts...
